House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is not running for a leadership post in the next Congress, ending two decades as the top House Democrat. “For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic Congress that I so deeply respect,” Pelosi, 82, announced on the House floor Thursday. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York has emerged as a frontrunner to replace Pelosi as leader of the party, and he officially put his hat in the ring Friday. Jeffries currently serves as chair of the Democratic Caucus, and has already secured several endorsements, including Pelosis. Democrats narrowly lost the House majority to Republicans in the midterm election, and current House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has his partys nomination for Speaker.
