Two law enforcement officers were shot and killed in a gunfight with a suspect who was also killed in upstate New York Sunday night, officials said.
According to the Syracuse Police Department, the incident began when its officers encountered a suspicious vehicle in the area of Emerson Avenue and Hamilton Street in Salina shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday. They attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled the area. Officers lost the vehicle, but were able to get its license plate number.
After tracking the vehicle’s registration to an address on Darien Drive in Liverpool, Syracuse police responded along with Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and found the vehicle parked at the residence.
Soon after their arrival, officers and deputies were confronted by an armed man, and an exchange of gunfire followed, police said.
One Syracuse police officer and one sheriff’s deputy were shot, along with the suspect, who was not publicly identified.
Both officers were transported to Upstate University Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries and died. The suspect was also transported to Upstate University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, as well as with their brothers and sisters in law enforcement who are suffering in the wake of this tragedy, the Syracuse Police Department said in a statement.
“This is our worst nightmare come true,” Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh said at a press conference. “And our thoughts right now are with the families of those two officers — those two heroes.”
