Germany: Letzte Generation Protesters Block Access To Lützerath Village In Efforts To Stop Coal Mine Expansion

Protesters in Germany this week continued their attempts to block the expansion of a coal mine after the village of Lützerath was cleared for the project. A video shared by the activist group Letzte Generation (Last Generation) shows protesters sitting in the road and singing Tuesday. “Lützerath has been cleared, but the coal under the village is still in the ground. And it must stay that way or it endangers countless lives,” the group tweeted alongside the video. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was previously arrested at the site while protesting alongside the group Lützerath bleibt! (Lützerath stays!). Activists are protesting the eviction of residents and the destruction of the western village to make way for an expansion of the Garzweiler lignite coal mine owned by energy company RWE. They say burning more coal, especially the more polluting lignite coal, would increase emissions in violation of the Paris Climate Agreement. Thunberg joined the protests in Lützerath on Friday, and urged supporters to join them for larger rallies over the weekend. Many have been protesting at the site for more than two years.
