Attorneys for Hunter Biden on Wednesday filed a federal lawsuit against Garrett Ziegler, a White House aide under former President Donald Trump, for his alleged role in publishing documents and photos found on the infamous laptop belonging to President Joe Biden’s son.
The suit filed in California accuses Ziegler of “accessing, tampering with, manipulating, altering, copying and damaging computer data that they do not own” in violation of state law.
Ziegler was an aide to former White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, who is facing prison after being convicted last week of two counts of criminal contempt of Congress after defying a subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
According to the lawsuit, Ziegler and 10 other unnamed defendants allegedly released “tens of thousands of emails, thousands of photos, and dozens of videos and recordings” on the internet. Some of those photos and videos depicted sex and drug use.
The lawsuit is just the latest in Hunter Biden’s ongoing battle with Republican operatives over the laptop and its contents, which emerged as a major controversy ahead of the 2020 presidential election.
In March, Hunter Biden’s attorney’s filed a lawsuit against John Paul Mac Isaac, the Delaware computer repairman who allegedly first obtained shared data from the laptop in 2019.
Meanwhile, a plea deal with federal prosecutors that would have allowed Hunter Biden to avoid jail time on a gun charge in exchange for pleading guilty to two misdemeanor tax offenses fell apart in July. Special counsel David Weiss indents to bring an indictment against him by the end of the month, according to a court filing last week.
On Tuesday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced he is launching an impeachment inquiry against President Biden, on allegations of “abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption” related to the Biden family’s business dealings, including Hunter’s work on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company.
