Attorneys for Hunter Biden on Tuesday filed a civil lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani and his former attorney for their alleged effort to hack into an electronic device belonging to Biden and copy and disseminate the data they found on it.
It is the latest in a series of lawsuits connected to the infamous laptop that belonged to President Joe Biden’s son, who is currently facing federal gun charges.
The lawsuit filed in California accuses Giuliani and Robert Costello of “hacking into, tampering with, manipulating, copying, disseminating, and generally obsessing over data that they were given that was taken or stolen from” his devices.
“Defendants’ statements suggest that their unlawful hacking activities are ongoing today and that, unless stopped, will continue into the future, thereby necessitating this action,” the complaint states.
Hunter Biden previously sued John Paul Mac Isaac, the Delaware computer repairman who allegedly first obtained and shared data from the laptop in 2019. Earlier this month, he filed a federal lawsuit against Garrett Ziegler, a White House aide under former President Donald Trump, for his alleged role in publishing documents and photos found on the laptop.
That lawsuit, also filed in California, accuses Ziegler of “accessing, tampering with, manipulating, altering, copying and damaging computer data that they do not own” in violation of state law.
According to the lawsuit, Ziegler and 10 other unnamed defendants allegedly released “tens of thousands of emails, thousands of photos, and dozens of videos and recordings” on the internet. Some of those photos and videos depicted sex and drug use.
The lawsuit is just the latest in Hunter Biden’s ongoing battle with Republican operatives over the laptop and its contents, which emerged as a major controversy ahead of the 2020 presidential election.
Meanwhile, Hunter Biden was indicted by special counsel David Weiss on felony gun charges earlier this month after a plea deal that would have allowed him to avoid jail time in exchange for pleading guilty to two misdemeanor tax offenses fell apart in July.
The charges stem from Hunter Biden’s purchase of a gun in Delaware in October 2018, in which he allegedly lied on a federal form stating he was not using or addicted to illegal drugs while he was regularly using crack cocaine. Lying on the form, which is required by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), is a federal crime.
He is charged with two counts connected to lying on the form and one count of possessing a firearm while using a narcotic. He is expected to plead not guilty.
The charges come amid a five-year investigation into Hunter Biden’s finances and personal life, and how they relate to the Biden family’s wider business dealings.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy launched an impeachment inquiry against President Biden, on allegations of “abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption” related to the Biden family’s business dealings, including Hunter’s work on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company.
