North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum suspended his presidential campaign on Monday, just two days before the fourth Republican primary debate, after failing to gain momentum in the polls.
The entrepreneur and two-term governor entered the race with very little national name recognition, and failed to break through a crowded GOP field.
We launched our campaign with a clear-eyed mission: Bring a business leader and proven governors voice to fight for the best of America. We will always remain committed to fighting for that, and for the people who make our nation so exceptional, Burgum said in a statement.
He also criticized the Republican National Committee’s clubhouse debate requirements for taking the power of democracy away from the engaged, thoughtful citizens of Iowa and New Hampshire.
Burgum failed to qualify for the third debate held in Miami, Fla., last month. Each debate has progressively higher inclusion criteria.
In order to qualify for that debate, candidates needed at least 70,000 unique donors, with at least 200 per state in 20 or more states, and had to reach at least 4% in two national polls approved by the RNC, or in one national poll plus one early-state poll from two separate carve-out states: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, or South Carolina.
None of their debate criteria relate to the qualifications related to actually doing the job of the president, Burgum said.
The fourth debate will be held Dec. 6 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in partnership with NewsNation, The Megyn Kelly Show on SiriusXM, the Washington Free Beacon and Rumble. In order to qualify, candidates need at least 80,000 unique donors, with at least 200 unique donors per state or territory in 20 or more states and territories, and has to reach at least 6% in two national polls or 6% in one national poll and 6% in one early state poll from two separate “carve out” states: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, or South Carolina.
Our decision to run for President came from a place of caring deeply about every American and a mission to re-establish trust in Americas leadership and our institutions of democracy, Burgum said, including his wife, Kathryn.
While this primary process has shaken my trust in many media organizations and political party institutions, it has only strengthened my trust in America, he said. Our nation doesnt need to be perfect to be exceptional.
