A 72-year-old Florida man was arrested Wednesday and charged with threatening to kill a U.S. Congressperson and their family.
Michael Shapiro of Greenacres made his first court appearance Wednesday and was released on bail until his arraignment scheduled for Jan. 24. He was charged with transmitting a violent threats in interstate commerce.
Court documents did not name Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., but he confirmed that he and his family were the target of the threats.
No threat is going to stop me from representing my constituents, Swalwell posted on X, formerly Twitter, late Wednesday. MAGA Republicans have chosen violence over voting and this is what it looks like. But Im not going away and neither should you.
According to the complaint, Shapiro allegedly made several calls from his Florida home and left five voicemails threatening to come after you and kill you and to come and kill your children.
“Hey greaseball, you [expletive] a [expletive] Chinese spy. Fang Fang. Fang Fang,” Shapiro allegedly said on one of the voicemails, apparently referring to Swalwells connection with Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese spy.
A House Ethics Committee probe into the allegations that Fang was improperly involved in fundraising operations for his 2014 campaign and place an intern in his office ended last year after it failed to find any wrongdoing on Swalwell’s part.
