Protesters marched in downtown Columbus, Ohio, on Monday, a week after Akron police shot and killed Jayland Walker, who was unarmed at the time. The Akron Police Department in Ohio on Sunday released body-camera videos of the shooting. A rally on Sunday began peacefully, but after dark, outside the Akron Police Department building, police used tear gas to disperse crowds. Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan declared a state of emergency. A curfew was issued for 9 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, and the citys Fourth of July fireworks were canceled. A video shared by Twitter user @crewsum shows protesters marching through the capital on Monday, chanting Walkers name. According to police, officers attempted to stop Walkers vehicle in the early hours of June 27, and a chase ensued. Police said Walker, 25, fired a weapon from his vehicle during the chase. Body-camera videos show officers approaching Walkers vehicle after the chase. Walker exits the vehicle, and after a brief foot chase, officers opened fire, striking Walker dozens of times and killing him. Video appears to show a gun on the front seat of Walkers car. Police Chief Stephen Mylett said it looked as though Walker reached toward his waist for a weapon, which caused officers to fire. Walker, who is black, was unarmed when he ran from police. Eight officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting the investigation.
