Michigan State University students rallied at the State Capitol in Lansing on Wednesday to call for stricter gun control measures after a shooting on campus Monday night.
A video shared by Twitter user @NSmithReports shared a video of the sit-in, where student body President Jo Kovach can be heard closing her speech with “Go Green!” Following the rally, a vigil for the victims was held Wednesday evening.
Junior Arielle Anderson, junior Alexandria Verner, and sophomore Brian Fraser were killed in the shooting spree, and five others were transported to Sparrow Hospital in critical condition, according to MSU Police.
The suspect, identified as as 43-year-old Anthony McRae, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, MSUs interim deputy chief Chris Rozman said in a Tuesday press conference.
MSU Police reported shots fired near Berkley Hall shortly after 8 p.m. Monday and advised the public to shelter in place. The suspect was reported to be on foot as authorities searched the campus. Shortly before 9:30 p.m., another shooting was reported at the IM East Fitness Center.
After authorities released surveillance images of the suspect, a tip quickly led police to locate McRae off campus early Tuesday, police said.
In an update Wednesday, police said they would not be releasing the names of the five hospitalized victims, who remained in critical condition.
All of the victims were students, and McRae’s motive is still under investigation, Rozman said.
All campus activities were canceled for 48 hours, including classes, athletics and other activities. Normal operations are to resume Thursday.
