The U.S. Department of Defense awarded Google, Oracle, Amazon and Microsoft a multibillion-dollar contract for cloud computing services.
The Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) calls for vendors to provide “enterprise-wide globally available cloud services across all security domains and classification levels.”
In a Thursday press conference, defense officials said each of the tech firms will receive at least $100,000 under the contract. The winners will receive a combined total of up to $9 billion.
The Defense Department said the use of multiple vendors will help keep costs down and increase the systems resiliency.
Previously, the Pentagon’s Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) used a single contractor for the entire military.
