Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on a basketball court at the American University Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. She appeared as part of the Title IX 50th Anniversary Field Day, celebrating the 1972 law which prohibited sex-based discrimiation in public schools. The Field Day event was attended by many schoolgirls aged 8-14 from nearby school districts, who had fun watching the Vice President shoot hoops. Her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, was also present and helped give the vice president tips for her basketball form. When Title IX was signed into law in 1972, only 300,000 high school girls played on their school sports teams. Now the number is over 3.4 million.
