U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned under heavy pressure from lawmakers in his own conservative party. Johnson announced his resignation outside the door of No. 10 Downing Street in London on July 7. In his remarks, Johnson called the decision painful and thanked the voters who elected him in December 2019. But as we have seen at Westminster, the herd instinct is powerful and when the herd moves, it moves, he said. Johnsons comments come after a 48-hour wave of resignations from leaders in his own government and party. Dozens of officials all said they lacked confidence in the prime minister after a slew of scandals questioned his judgment and ethics. Johnson said he will stay in office until the conservatives choose a new party leader. A timetable for choosing the new prime minister is expected to be announced soon.
