Steve Bannon, former advisor to President Donald Trump, was sentenced on Friday to four months in prison and fined $6,500 for criminal contempt of Congress.
The U.S. House of Representatives held Bannon in contempt after he refused to comply with a subpoena for documents and testimony from the select committee probing the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
He was convicted after a trial in July. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols delivered the sentence Friday and said Bannon could remain free while he appeals the conviction.
The sentence falls short of the 6 months incarceration and maximum $200,000 fine requested by federal prosecutors.
Bannon asked for probation, with his attorneys arguing that he was following his previous attorneys advice when he defied the subpoena.
