Jair Bolsonaro narrowly lost his bid for a second term as Brazils president, coming up short in Sundays runoff election against his leftist rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, known as “Lula.” Lula da Silva, 77, previously served as president of Brazil from 2003 to 2010, and the trade unionist was extremely popular when he left office. He was later embroiled in a corruption scandal and jailed in 2018 for more than a year. Brazils Supreme Court threw out his convictions after finding the judge in his case was biased. Lula da Silva received more than 60 million votes, breaking his own 2006 record, but his margin of victory was only 50.90% to Bolsonaros 49.10%. U.S. President Joe Biden quickly sent official congratulations to Lula da Silva Sunday night, though Bolsonaro had not yet conceded defeat by midday Monday.
