The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the most significant gun control legislation in nearly 30 years. The House passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act with a 234 to 193 vote on Friday, June 24. The Senate passed its own version of the bill the night before with a 65-33 vote. The measure is now on its way to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was written in response to the mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas. The bill will strengthen background checks for young gun buyers and incentivize states to pass red-flag laws. It would also close the so-called boyfriend loophole. The law would keep guns away from unmarried people convicted of domestic abuse against a dating partner.
